Senior Engineering Project Manager - Coal

  • Engineering
  • Full-time
  • Cambridge, MA
  • Remote

Mantel is developing the first molten-salt-based carbon capture technology designed to operate at the high temperatures found inside boilers, kilns, and furnaces — enabling highly efficient carbon capture that has not been possible until now. Carbon capture can be applied across industries to reduce emissions and achieve net-negative emissions. By solving for efficiency Mantel can cut costs substantially, unlocking carbon capture's role in reaching net zero emissions by 2050. To learn more, go to: https://www.mantelcapture.com/

The Senior Project Manager drives execution of Mantel's early projects from design through commissioning and into operation. You'll coordinate across EPCs, equipment vendors, consultants, and host-site teams — keeping schedules on track, deliverables moving, and the right people aligned at every stage. This role sits at the intersection of technical and commercial execution, and the person who fills it will need to be equally comfortable in a project meeting and on a construction site.

Experience with coal, solid fuel combustion, and high-temperature industrial processes is a strong asset.

What you'll do:

1. Project Execution & Schedule Ownership

•        Own the project schedule end-to-end: develop, maintain, and drive it — across internal teams, EPCs, vendors, and host-site stakeholders

•        Track technical deliverables, identify risks early, and keep the team ahead of schedule rather than reacting to it

•        Facilitate weekly status meetings and ensure clear, consistent communication across all project parties

•        Coordinate with leadership on project staffing, resource planning, and budget tracking

2. Technical Coordination & Review

•        Review and track engineering deliverables: P&IDs, equipment specifications, QA/QC documentation, and engineering test procedures

•        Coordinate across disciplines — I&C, mechanical, electrical, civil — to resolve interface issues and keep design progressing

•        Ensure all technical work meets Mantel's standards and is complete before it moves to the next phase

•        Support HAZOP execution and ensure safety compliance is embedded throughout the project lifecycle

3. Contractor & Vendor Management

•        Serve as the day-to-day coordination point for EPCs, equipment vendors, and consultants

•        Drive accountability on deliverables, timelines, and quality from all external parties

•        Manage RFIs, submittals, and change orders with precision and a clear paper trail

4. Commissioning Support

•        Work closely with the Commissioning Director to develop and execute commissioning plans

•        Coordinate pre-commissioning activities, punch list close-out, and startup sequencing across all project parties

•        Ensure the project transitions cleanly from construction into commissioning and from commissioning into operation

5. Reporting & Internal Alignment

•        Produce clear, concise project reports and updates for leadership and stakeholders

•        Surface issues early with proposed solutions — not just status updates

•        Keep internal teams aligned on priorities, decisions, and next steps

Who You Are:

Experience: 7+ years in project management or project engineering in an industrial setting, with at least one full commissioning or startup campaign; experience with coal, solid fuels, or high-temperature combustion processes is strongly preferred

Education: B.Eng. or B.S. in Chemical, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline; PMP designation is an asset

Put differently,

•        You've run a project schedule before and know what it takes to keep one honest — you don't wait for things to slip before escalating

•        You understand the technical work well enough to review it, push back on it, and coordinate across disciplines without losing the thread

•        You're comfortable in coal plants, cement kilns, or other heavy industrial environments — the heat, the complexity, and the operational reality don't faze you

•        You're organized to a fault: clear documentation, clean handoffs, no loose ends

•        You communicate well across a mixed audience — engineers, operators, executives, and site contractors all get what they need from you

•        You're genuinely curious about carbon capture and motivated by the role industrial decarbonization plays in reaching net zero

What You'll Get:

•        Close collaboration with a high-caliber engineering, commercial, and operations team

•        Growing scope and responsibility as Mantel's project portfolio expands

•        A meaningful role in building one of the most exciting carbon capture companies in the world

We provide competitive and holistic compensation to all our full-time team members, including:

•        Highly competitive pay based on experience, including equity

•        90% subsidized medical and dental healthcare coverage for employees, 50% for dependents

•        Unlimited vacation policy, mental health personal days, generous sick leave, plus a week-long winter break at the end of December

•        Health/Fitness and cell phone stipend

•        Paid parental leave
