Commissioning Specialist/Engineer

  • Engineering
  • Full-time

Mantel is developing the first molten-salt-based carbon capture technology designed to operate at the high temperatures found inside boilers, kilns, and furnaces — enabling highly efficient carbon capture that has not been possible until now. Carbon capture can be applied across industries to reduce emissions and achieve net-negative emissions. By solving for efficiency Mantel can cut costs substantially, unlocking carbon capture's role in reaching net zero emissions by 2050. To learn more, go to: https://www.mantelcapture.com/

The Commissioning Specialist works directly with the commissioning team to execute the startup of Mantel's first-of-a-kind demonstration system. You'll be on the ground running pre-commissioning checks, executing procedures, coordinating trades, and making sure the system comes up safely and to design intent.

This is a field-heavy role. You'll spend significant time on-site at partner and host facilities, with shifts typically running 10 days on, 10 days off.

What you'll do:

1. Commissioning Execution

  • Execute pre-commissioning and commissioning activities under the direction of the Commissioning Director: walkdowns, loop checks, interlock verification, flushing, leak testing, and startup sequencing

  • Work through punch lists methodically - identify, document, and close out items with contractors and trades on-site

  • Follow commissioning procedures precisely and flag deviations clearly and immediately

2. Site Coordination

  • Coordinate day-to-day on-site activities with contractors, trades, and host-site operations personnel

  • Serve as a reliable, professional Mantel presence on the ground - keeping work moving safely and on schedule

  • Support the Commissioning Director in maintaining a well-organized, well-documented site at all times

3. Documentation & Records

  • Maintain accurate commissioning records: completed procedures, punch lists, test results, and field observations

  • Ensure documentation is complete, legible, and organized — the record you leave behind matters

  • Feed field observations and lessons learned back to the engineering and commissioning team

4. Safety & Compliance

  • Execute all work in compliance with site safety requirements, LOTO procedures, and Mantel's operating standards

  • Participate in pre-job safety briefings, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments

  • Raise safety concerns immediately - no work is more important than a safe site

Who You Are:

Experience: 7+ years of hands-on experience in industrial plant commissioning, construction, or operations; relevant field experience and demonstrated commissioning competency are what count

French speaking is a plus

Put differently,

  • You've been through at least one plant startup and know what the work actually looks like - pre-comm checks, punch lists, the last-minute scrambles, and how to keep your head through all of it

  • You're a careful, methodical executor - you follow procedures, document everything, and don't cut corners

  • You're comfortable working in industrial environments: heat, noise, PPE, shift schedules, and tight coordination with trades don't slow you down

  • You take direction well and communicate clearly - you keep the Commissioning Director informed and surface issues early

  • You're reliable and follow through without needing to be chased

What You'll Get:

  • Hands-on experience commissioning one of the world's first high-temperature molten-salt carbon capture systems

  • Direct mentorship and day-to-day collaboration with an experienced Commissioning Director

  • A meaningful role in Mantel's most important field work, with growing scope as the project portfolio expands

  • A central role in building one of the most exciting carbon capture companies in the world
