Global Press is hiring a regional editorial coach for Latin America to lead learning and professional development for our diverse team of reporters in Latin America. Editorial coaches will develop, assess and measure reporter professional development to ensure it aligns with Global Press Institute’s standards and mission. The editorial coach sits on the Global Press Institute  team and reports to the Lead Editorial Coach.  You will collaborate heavily with the newsroom, working directly with reporters, regional editors, story editors and photo editors. Editorial coaches also receive editor bylines on stories they edit. 

Editorial coaches are journalists who are committed to teaching reporters and creating learning-centered editorial processes that enable our journalists to become the reporters of record in their region. The ideal candidate is a bilingual journalist with a proven track record of producing ethical, accurate, and exceptional journalism, a deep commitment to mentorship, and a knack for creating processes that support journalists so they can create their best work.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Editorial Coach to reporters in training who are new to the organization 

  • Become an expert in Global Press Institute’s learning curriculum on Global Press Institute Online (GPI Online), our learning management system

  • Measure and assess individual reporter skill sets and performance on a quarterly basis

  • Build pathways to learning new skills for reporters on GPI Online and in the newsroom to ensure reporters are actively building basic, intermediate and advanced skills

  • Collaborate with the Lead Editorial Coach and the Global Training Manager on new training solutions on GPI Online and in the newsroom

  • Coach reporters in story idea development, writing and article structure. Edit stories on an as needed basis in the newsroom

  • Work closely with the Latin America Regional Editor (to be hired) and the Managing Editor to share feedback on reporter development and identify skills gaps and learning opportunities. 

  • Proficiently work in both English and Spanish

Qualifications

  • 5+ years as an editor in a regional, national or international newsroom 

  • Fluent in English and Spanish (Fluency will be evaluated during the hiring process. TOEFL scores of advanced and high-intermediate are required. )

  • Extensive experience reporting, writing  and editing copy in Spanish

  • Experience editing copy in English preferred 

  • Passionate about and/or experience with coaching and mentoring journalists and/or teams of journalists

  • Experience working within learning management systems and using and/or creating training rubrics and skill development metrics

  • Experience reporting and editing stories from Latin America

  • A deep cultural understanding of Latin America

  • Experience in one of the Global Press coverage countries (not required, but preferred)
