Global Press Journal is looking for a nimble, creative photo editor to join our newsroom. This person will work with our team of reporters around the world to elevate their photographic coverage for features and investigative pieces. This person will work closely with the senior photo editor and photo team, and collaborate with reporters, editors and Global Press Journal staff to contribute to visual curation and presentation on globalpressjournal.com. The photo editor must be detail-oriented and have a talent for remote technical coaching. This person should be deadline-driven and be able to work efficiently and accurately.

This is a remote, nine-month contract position, and the selected candidate must accommodate regular availability in Eastern Standard Time and reporter time zones.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently support and advise reporters on the use of photography in their work and provide feedback and guidance on reshoots as needed 

  • Edit at least 15 stories a month

  • Coach reporters through technical challenges and help them diagnose issues and solutions   

  • Ensure that all published photos adhere to Global Press metadata policies and that all files are consistent and searchable in PhotoShelter

  • Demonstrate strong editorial judgment and maintain a high level of photojournalism ethics and standards

  • Review and ensure all photo captions are consistent with the Global Press Style Guide

  • Collaborate with the editorial team on all photo aspects of travel-related stories 

  • Coach and advise reporters on photo aspects of long-form investigative stories

  • Participate in weekly editorial planning meetings and collaborate to develop powerful visual stories

  • Prepare and host bimonthly photo meetings that encourage reporters to reflect and learn

Qualifications

  • At least 3-5 years of experience as photo editor in a newsroom 

  • Experience teaching photography to people with varying skill sets

  • Technical understanding and familiarity with various equipment 

  • Expertise in writing, grammar, syntax and AP style

  • Advanced proficiency in Lightroom and Photo Mechanic

  • Experience organizing and maintaining a photo archive and using a data asset management system (DAM)

  • Experience creating visually led narratives and enthusiasm for visual journalism

  • Experience with cross-cultural communication 

  • Excellent news judgment and ethics 

  • Knowledge of multiple languages and management experience preferred

  • Entrepreneurial and solutions-oriented mindset
