Mantel is a climate tech startup supported by Breakthrough Energy, The Engine and New Climate Ventures. Born out of MIT, Mantel was founded by two MIT scientists and a Harvard MBA to develop the material solution to carbon capture. Our molten borates are designed to operate at the high temperatures found inside boilers, kilns, and furnaces – enabling highly efficient carbon capture that has not been possible until now. Carbon capture can be applied across industry to reduce emissions - and even achieve net-negative emissions. By solving for efficiency Mantel can reduce energy losses to near-zero and cut costs in half, unlocking carbon capture’s role in reaching net-zero emissions globally. 

Mantel is looking for a Molten Salt Engineer excited to join a promising carbon capture startup working on the development of molten salts as a novel CO2 sorbent material. The position will be an integral part of the Engineering Team, specializing in the high temperature molten salt subsystem of Mantel’s carbon capture plants. The Molten Salt Engineer will work with Mantel’s engineers and partner EPCs to design, build, commission, and operate Mantel’s First Of A Kind demonstration system. The position will perform process analysis/calculation/modeling, equipment specification, support salt instrumentation application and design, participate in HAZOP/PHA, create and optimize startup/shutdown procedures, lead molten salt subsystem commissioning and troubleshooting, and support cross-discipline coordination with the Mantel R&D team. Mantel is looking for a well-organized, versatile technical problem solver who can think outside the box and communicate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.   

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors degree in engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Materials) 

  • Industry experience with molten salt, metals, or other high temperature fluid systems 

  • Experience with high temperature materials selection and corrosion 

  • Field experience with industrial plant commissioning, operation, and/or maintenance 

  • Strong background in safe plant operation, industrial safety, and process hazard analysis 

  • Thorough understanding of engineering drawings, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and engineering procedures 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience with carbon capture systems 

  • Experience with CFD, Aspen HYSYS, or HTRI 

* Experience: Minimum 3 years of industry experience with molten salt/metals/high temperature fluids 

* Location: Hybrid (Cambridge, MA). Travel (1-2 weeks at a time) to partner and customer sites is required.
