Background & Overview

Kano Therapeutics harnesses the power of DNA nanotechnology and synthetic biology to design and engineer novel gene constructs. Our goal is to expand the reach of genome-editing-based therapies through the development of transformational biomaterials. Instead of innovating around the messenger (gene delivery systems, gene editing tools), we start by innovating around the message - the DNA payload that carries the genetic information.

Position Profile 

We are seeking a talented and motivated mammalian cell genome engineer to join our team focused on the development of genome editing tools to broaden the reach of Kano’s novel circular single-stranded DNA template molecules. As a member of our research and development team, you will play a crucial role in advancing our platform for cell and gene therapy applications.  This position will report to the Associate Director of Synthetic Biology. 


  • Contribute to a positive, supportive and friendly culture focused on working hard together.

  • Create new tools and protocols to enable ex vivo and in vivo cell and gene therapy applications.  

  • Develop and optimize protocols for genome editing in multiple mammalian cell types using Kano novel DNA donor templates.

  • Develop new cellular delivery mechanisms for genome engineering tools.

  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in genome editing and related fields to contribute innovative ideas to the team.

  • Conduct foundational research to support patent applications and draft key sections of patent filings. 

  • Maintain organized records of experiments and materials in electronic lab notebooks and databases.

  • Operate cross-functionally to support other groups at Kano Therapeutics as appropriate. 


  • PhD in Biology, Cell Biology, Bioengineering, or related fields or BS in Biology or related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. 

  • Research experience in Mammalian Synthetic Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or a related field.

  • Expertise in culturing, transfecting and editing mammalian cells. Mammalian genome engineering tool development preferred. 

  • Comfort with cloning techniques such as Gibson Assembly and Golden Gate Assembly.

  • Experience with in vivo mammalian cellular delivery of nucleic acids and/or proteins. 

  • History of driving research projects to successful completion in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, navigates easily working with researchers from all levels of training.
