Summary

We're looking for a Engineer Lead to head our small developer team. Our ideal candidate is a technically sharp, detail-oriented problem-solver with experience leading consumer-focused engineering teams. Catalog is a team of seven with three full-time engineers and engineering contributions from our cofounder.

Catalog exists to empower artists with more autonomy and earnings for their work by providing new value models, discovery tools, and listening experiences. We love music, and we believe in a world where more artists can make a living creating it. Currently, Catalog takes shape as an internet radio and music marketplace for 1-of-1 digital records.

Catalog is backed by Variant Fund1confirmation, and Kindred Ventures, as well as a collection of artists, founders, and builders in the music and web3 and music spaces. We’re a remote-first team with the flexibility and independence to work within our own environments and schedules. Our community is artist-first and global.

Who are you?

You’re a strong leader with experience managing engineers, and you have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You’re comfortable working across the stack on backend, frontend, and DevOps. You’re excited to evolve engineering structures & systems, refine processes, and help shape the product roadmap. You’re not afraid to get your hands dirty, with a majority of your time going towards writing, reviewing, and testing code. You care about creating a better world for music makers.

What you’ll do

Technical Leadership and Execution

  • You’ll own our stack & tooling infrastructure, building robust and scalable systems to supercharge engineering efforts. You’ll ensure the team has processes in place to deliver quality projects at high velocity. You'll drive improvements in code and system design, spending time e.g. streamlining DevOps flows to enable rapid deployment and scaling, architecting backend services, improving performance, etc. You’ll deliver on technical priorities by working in the code hands-on and helping support others.

  • You’ll support our engineering team throughout the product development lifecycle, serving as a thoughtful voice in technical decisions and helping break down product proposals. You’ll drive performance and hold the team accountable to externally and internally imposed deadlines and targets.

  • You’ll work with our cofounders to help ensure our product roadmap and product initiatives are well-sequenced, tightly-scoped, and manage trade-offs well. You'll advocate for a good balance of bug fixes, refactoring, and new development. You'll help set reasonable deadlines and decide between cutting scope or letting deadlines slip when needed.

Team Management

  • Grow an organizational design for a small team engineers. You’ll manage the engineering team, foster a collaborative engineering culture, and help each member of the team be their best.

  • If and when we hire in engineering, you’ll lead the technical side of that process, and should be great at screening and interviewing. If someone isn't working out, you'll be responsible for managing that as well.

What you’ll bring

  • Multiple years of engineering leadership experience

  • Multiple years of full stack software engineering experience

  • Your ability to independently tackle a wide array of complex engineering problems and deliver results aligned with team objectives and strategic priorities

  • Experience working in cross-functional organizations, collaborating with a small team to deliver high-quality experiences

  • An insatiable hunger for rapidly shipping

  • An eagerness to help others

Skills

  • Proficiency in TypeScript, Next, Postgres, GraphQL, Hasura, Bun/Node and Docker

  • Proficiency in modern software development practices (e.g. CI/CD, security, performance)

  • Familiarity with product delivery processes and tools (e.g. Linear, Notion, GitHub, Figma, MixPanel)

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-pace environment

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Bonus

  • Experience writing smart contracts or strong EVM knowledge

  • Experience building onchain or knowledge of web3 products, developer tools & infrastructure

  • Experience working on fully remote teams
