We are seeking a Polymer Scientist to help in the development of our next-generation brain-machine interface. This is an extraordinary opportunity to join our core team to help to shape the future of our company. This position will be on-site at our headquarters near Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA.

As a Polymer Scientist at Axoft, you will work alongside research scientists on polymer synthesis, coating techniques for microfabricated devices and analyze in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility assays.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high yield, air-free polymer synthesis processes for use in a brain implant medical device

  • Develop photo-curable polymers and implement feedback from microfabrication engineers to optimize usability

  • Work with external labs or GMP suppliers to develop the scale-up process for full production

  • Analysis of chemical data (including, but not limited to NMR, FTIR, Raman, GPC, etc.)

  • Preparation of specimens for mechanical and physical characterizations (including, but not limited to tensile testing, rheometry, DSC, TGA, etc.)

  • Development of optimal purification techniques to meet rigorous medical purity and quality standards, possibly alongside an external lab

  • Drafting of raw material and sub-assembly specifications for medical device manufacturing process flow

  • Ideation of novel coating methods

 

Qualifications (required)

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry/Science or similar

  • Experience with polymer chemistry/synthesis using air-free synthesis in a laboratory setting

  • 0-2 years’ industry or academic experience in a materials-related field

  • A passion for advancing medical technology that will drastically improve patients’ quality of life

  • Experience in complex chemical data analysis

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Driven and detail-oriented

  • Proven expertise with working towards ambitious targets. Driven to exceed expectations.

Qualifications (preferred)

  • Experience with chromatography or other polymer purification techniques

  • Experience with microfabrication techniques (photolithography, lift-off metal patterning)
