Veterinary Surgery Specialist – Rodent Neurosurgery

We are seeking a Veterinary Surgery Specialist to help in the development of our next-generation brain-machine interface. You will help the R&D teams to implant pre-clinical prototypes in various animal models to demonstrate safety and efficacy of our technology. Key qualifications:  

  • B.S./B.A. degree in animal science or equivalent field required. 

  • Two years related rodent (primarily rat) care and handling experience as well as veterinary technical skills required.  

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed. 

  • Certification/Licensure: AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) or higher. Veterinary Technician licensure of CVT or LVT is preferred. 

  • Experienced and proficient in rat technical skills, including handling, restraint, gavage, injection, and phlebotomy techniques.  

  • Capable of performing aseptic technique for rodent neurosurgery. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • High attention to detail and a phenomenal work ethic. 

  

Preferred qualifications:  

  • Experience in large animal (canine, ovine or equivalent) and/or non-primate neurosurgery. 

  • Experience in the implantation of neural probes and related brain surgeries (e.g craniotomy, durotomy)  

  

Your responsibilities:  

  • Collaborate and report to the Senior Research Scientist about the general progress and strategy for hardware system development. 

  • Perform rodent (primarily rat) neurosurgery to implant the softest neural recording probe that enables massive communication between the brain and computer.  

  • Conduct routine audits of animal holding rooms and procedure spaces to ensure the health and well-being of the animals and adherence to regulations, institutional policies, standard operating procedures.  

  • Identify veterinary problems such as unexpected experimental outcomes, equipment issues, dead and/or sick animals, overcrowded cage conditions, physical plant issues, takes part in cause-and-effect analysis. 

  • Be responsible for ensuring and maintaining veterinary records such as, sentinel health reports, drug log audits, inventory supply as well as ordering supplies for the veterinary group.
