Company description

Anthology is a strain evolution company based in Cambridge, MA, that generates diverse genomes to scale and digitalize biomanufacturing. With roots in MIT, BU, and Harvard, Anthology unlocks new possibilities for biomanufacturing by accelerating the speed of genetic mutations and selection, which quickly adapts organisms to grow efficiently in renewable feedstocks, discover and scale products in the industry of making enzymes and food ingredients, as well as in the emerging climate market. Beginning with filamentous fungi and autotrophic bacteria, Anthology's technology will lead to a bioeconomic future where carbon-neutral - and ultimately carbon-negative production - is possible. Anthology is backed by leading venture capital firms, and more info can be found here.

Job description

We are seeking a creative and dynamic Synthetic Biology Intern (summer) to contribute to the genetics tooling and product development workflow at Anthology. This unique role provides an opportunity to be a part of a fast-paced team contributing to the forefront of technology development in synthetic biology and fungal biology. The ideal candidate should have a passion for engineering biology. We are a small (<10), yet highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team, and you will interact closely with the team, take on responsibilities, and be deeply involved in the project development. You will be required to work on-site with the genetics team.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Design and construct genetic payloads to build genetic circuitry, and generate genome diversity in fungi

  • Culture and engineer various bacteria and fungi

  • Perform quantitative protein assays

  • Collaborate with the hardware team on designing and optimizing for efficient payload (DNA, protein) delivery

Qualifications

Required

  • MSc or PhD (ongoing or completed) in bioengineering, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field

  • Demonstrated ability for molecular cloning (PCR, DNA assembly, sequence analysis) and microbiology (bacterial and/or fungal transformation)

  • Experience with basic protein analysis (SDS-PAGE)

  • Excitement about learning new skills around design of experiments and taming new fungi

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

Preferred

  • Previous experience with protein expression in fungal and bacterial hosts.

  • Has successfully transformed yeast or filamentous fungal hosts before.

  • Experience with advanced protein assay development such as enzyme activity assays, ELISA and protein quantification assays.

  • DNA extraction experience and PCR based strain verification.

What we offer

  • Opportunity to learn and apply first-in-class genetic tools in an emerging synbio field of non-model organism engineering, and participate in building a transformative platform in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, team-focused work environment.

  • Professional development through mentorship/training while working together to meet the company goals.

  • A dynamic start-up ecosystem with weekly - monthly social events, and a community lunchroom with cold brew coffee on tap.

Start date and duration
